Every great invention starts with a spark - or, in this case, a paw. Designer Jude Biddulph, creator of the Cat Scratch Turntable, tells the story in his own words:
‘We were having a party and there was a turntable, and the record was spinning around. The cat was attracted to the movement of the record, so it jumped up, put its paw on the record to stop it, and it basically looked like the cat was DJ-ing. That’s kind of where it stemmed from.
I then built a cardboard version to see if I could get the cat to do it again, which it did.
It looked funny when it was doing it. There’s obviously a connotation with the word scratch and scratching, and so it all sort of stemmed from there really - it was a cat really trying to do it in the flesh.
Since then, we’ve sold the product globally. There’ve even been a few celebrities who’ve taken pictures of their cats with it as well.
But yeah, that’s the background of how it kind of got started. It was an event, and the cat really did start DJ-ing.’
